When is it too late to stop crabgrass?

Between midsummer and early fall, each crabgrass plant produces thousands of seeds. The seeds go dormant over the winter and lie in wait to germinate from mid-spring to midsummer.

Specifically, germination takes place when the soil temperature reaches about 55 degrees. Simple indicators include when you notice shrubs blooming and trees budding.Warm nights and periods of rainfall also encourage crabgrass germination.

If crabgrass has already begun to sprout, a post-emergent treatment may be helpful, but it’s important to apply before the weed starts to seed. After that, it’s best to wait until next season, and take preventative measures during late winter or early spring.
