It is summertime, which means outdoor time, and time enjoying your lawn. Spending time having a cookout, watching your kids play on the grass, or just enjoying the sun is a big part of summer. Unfortunately, summertime also means that lawns can get too overheated, and the green grass may look not so green. You may even have portions of your lawn that die. But this isn’t the end of the world.

Here are some summer lawn care tips to protect your lawn:

Make sure that your grass is correct for your climate

First of all, you do not want to have a grass seed that takes up too much moisture if you live in a hot, arid climate. You should talk with your Lawn Doctor lawn care professional to make sure that the type of grass you have is the best one for your climate. Summer lawn care is not a one size fits all solution, of course, so it is important that you get the best grass for your town. Also, keep in mind whether there are any water restrictions in your area; if there are, you want to find a grass that drinks up less water.

Water regularly, but only at certain times

Generally speaking, your lawn will need between an inch and an inch of a half of water each week. This figure, which includes any rainfall accumulated, will help keep your lawn healthy and nourished, and prevent those brown patches. It is better to water a bunch at once, a few times a week, as opposed to a little bit every few days. And a sprinkler system which makes sure to cover your entire lawn is much better than simply using a garden hose. In addition, it is best to water early in the morning or evening, and avoid the summer sun simply evaporating the water too quickly. But you would be surprised at how many people disobey that rule. And finally, check with your town’s rules to make sure that you do not violate any water conversation guidelines.

Use fertilizer regularly

Lawn fertilizer is essential to summer lawn care and is one of the best ways to keep your lawn green. But you do not want to use too much, or too little, fertilizer. In addition, this is something you need to start applying before summer comes; otherwise, it may be too late for your lawn. Talk with your Lawn Doctor professional about what a good summer lawn care program is for and how to fertilize your lawn.

Mow regularly, but at a high setting

You do not want to clip your lawn too short. Longer grass means longer – and stronger — roots, which means that it is easier for your lawn to survive in the summer heat. Never cut more than one-third of your grass’ height. So set your lawn mower at a high setting, which will not cut it too short. If you end up scalping your lawn, it will make it more likely to turn brown.

If you need to repair some areas of your lawn from the summer heat, or just want some guidance on protecting your lawn and keeping it healthy, why not reach out to your Lawn Doctor lawn care expert for help? Before you know it, your lawn will be as good as new!
