Soil is the foundation for all plants. Soil tests provide the fundamental information about your soil and measure the pH level and nutrients.
Lawn Doctor of Greater Columbus does 100’s of test per year. Though each soil test is specific to an individual customers lawn, there are trends that we see in Greater Columbus such as high pH levels and low potassium and phosphorus levels.
So how do you read your soil test? Below is a sample:

On these reports, there are optimal ranges shown and bars that reflect the individual measurements. In this example, the pH level is moderately high, the Phosphorus level is fine as is the calcium level. The Magnesium level is slightly high, and the Potassium level is very low. The organic matter level is good though this lab does not put in the optimal range.
What do these results mean for this customer. The soil test alone tells us that more is needed for this customer’s soil. We usually recommend our soil enrichment program in situations like this. We also look at the history of each customer to determine other conditions such as how thick the grass is, how much shade there is and the number of weeds. Lawns that are thin may also need Power Seeding.
Soil enrichment provides many nutrients that are often missing in lawns such as boron, zinc, copper, and a host of others including microorganisms. Give us a call to learn more about Soil Testing and Soil Enrichment.
