Lawn Weed Control in Boston: Stop Invaders with a Treatment Plan

Close up of blades of grass showing lawn weed control in BostonIt would be nice if there were one product that suppressed all weed types. Sadly, that’s not the case. In fact, with so many species common in the Boston, MA area, each with varying growing cycles, lawn weed control must be timed just right. On top of that, cultural practices, like mowing and watering, and the overall health of your yard have to be considered too as they can contribute to an infestation. It’s a lot to manage, which is why you need a plan that consists of:

  • Assessing. Your first step should be to check your soil. Soil quality issues – like compaction, a nutrient deficiency, or pH imbalance – can create conditions where opportunistic weeds will take root and spread.
  • Seeding. A thick lawn will naturally block out developing weeds. So spot seed any bare, patchy, or vulnerable areas with a high-quality mixture to improve turf density.
  • Fertilizing. Keeping weeds at bay requires that your lawn is fueled with nourishing essentials. This not only supports better growth on the surface, but deeper roots down below.
  • Maintaining. When cutting, don’t mow more than 1/3 off the height of your grass. Also, water infrequently, but deeply. Otherwise, roots will begin growing near the surface, where they’re subject to far more stress.

Even when you proactively work to keep your lawn healthy and growing strong, you’ll still see some weeds. When you do, it’s important to treat them with the right product at the proper time of year. Take grassy species, for instance. These include crabgrass, goosegrass, and quackgrass. These should be targeted before they germinate, in early spring, with a pre-emergent product. Broadleaf varieties, the other major type, are best treated in the fall when they’re absorbing energy and any herbicide you apply, too.
