If you have shrubs in your yard, you want to have them looking great, and surviving throughout the winter. But how can you do that? Here are some winter shrub care tips:

Shrubs need water, too

You know that your lawn needs regular watering, but that goes for shrubs as well. And if you don’t water them regularly, you could see your shrubs face real damage, or even die from the lack of water. (Of course, if you live in an area with local water conservation limits, please obey your local regulations.) Water when it is at least 40 degrees out, and do it no later than midday, so it will not freeze on your shrubs at night.

Another thing you may want to consider is getting Lawn Doctor to put an anti-dessicant spray on the shrubs – this can keep them from drying out in the winter.

Put protective measures in place

There are a variety of things you can do to protect your shrubs – especially newly planted ones – from suffering damage due to wind and cold and snow in the winter. You may want to consider putting up a windscreen to protect your shrubs.

A layer of mulch around the roots of the shrubs can also be a big help in the winter to keep your shrubs green and growing throughout the years. Another thing you can do is put burlap around the shrubs to protect them, if needed.  You can also put twine on shrubs to prevent ice and snow from building up on them.

Prune your shrubs

Now is a great time to get your shrubs pruned. This will not only help your shrubs grow stronger, but it will protect against damage in the winter cold.

For any of these items, or to get other advice on how to take care of your shrubs in the winter, contact your Lawn Doctor professional to learn more. They can prune your shrubs, put on mulch, get your yard ready for winter, and give you practical advice for your yard.
