Fungus Among Us

It is common for cool season grass lawns such as those in Greater Columbus to get fungus. The most prevalent types of fungus are red thread and dollar spot. Both are a bit unsightly but do not kill your grass. During periods of elevated temperatures and humidity, we commonly see outbreaks of fungus.

The nitrogen in fertilizer may help the fungus grow out, depending upon the severity of the disease. Alternately, we can try a fungicide to help control the fungus. Fungicides vary in their effectiveness and are difficult to time correctly.

We have found our soil enrichment program to work very well at promoting grass growth which often helps the fungus grow out.

There are no magic bullets, and some lawns respond better than others with fungicide and soil enrichment, or both.

If your lawn is irrigated, turn off your system during periods of heavy rain or delay watering. Target 1” to 1.5” in total per week. Avoid watering at night as fungus spreads at night.

Remember that cool season grasses prefer temperatures in the 60’s and begin to struggle when temperatures reach 80’s and above. Give Lawn Doctor of Greater Columbus a call if you have additional questions (614-771-1589) or email us at group235@lawndoctor.com
