How to Tell If Your Lawn Needs Fertilizer

“I’m a new homeowner,” Brett said with a shrug. “I have never had a lawn in my life. So now I go through the home store and I see all these bags of fertilizer and grass seed and weed killer. I don’t know what to do with any of that stuff. Can somebody tell me what to do?”

Well, hi Brett! We provide lawn care services in Norwell and surrounding Massachusetts communities and we’d be happy to clue you in. Let’s start with fertilizer.

Think of fertilizer as nutrition for your lawn. In a way it’s just like food for your body. How do you know when your lawn needs fertilizer? Well, how do you know when you need to eat?  While you may experience hunger pains, or just look at the clock and know it’s time for a meal, your lawn gives off a few distinct signs that fertilization is in order.

#1: Your grass is yellow, brown, or rust colored.

Grass should be green. If it’s not, it’s a clear sign the lawn is not getting some type of nutrition it desperately needs to grow properly, or it’s too dry. If the lawn is adequately watered and you’re still getting yellow, brown, or rust colored grass, it’s time to fertilize.

#2: Your grass grows very slowly.

Depending on the type of grass you have in your lawn, you should expect between half an inch to several inches of growth each week. If that’s not happening, it’s because your grass is undernourished. Fertilizer provides the boost of organic material and minerals needed to grow. Give your Norwell lawn care service a call and have them help you out.

#3: Lots and lots of weeds are everywhere.

When the lawn is underfertilized, grass growth is poor. This allows lots and lots of weeds, which generally require less in the way of nutrition and water to get established and grow. And as we all know, once weeds appear, they start to spread fast!
