For best results grass is ideally grown in a slightly acidic soil, and soil acidity is measured by a number called pH.

Soil pH must be in the optimum range to ensure maximum nutrient availability. When a soil becomes too acid or alkaline, some nutrients used by your grass become unavailable.

What Are the Right pH Levels for Soil?

The pH level of soil measures its acidity or alkalinity, which can significantly impact your lawn’s overall health. Ideally, grass prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH range between 6.0 and 7.0. Within this range, vital nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are readily available for your grass to absorb.

When the soil’s pH drifts outside this optimal range, it hinders the absorption of these nutrients, even if they’re present in the soil. Nutrient lockout can lead to a lawn that’s patchy and prone to weed invasions.

What impacts soil pH levels?
  • Rainfall: Areas with high rainfall tend to have more acidic soil because rain leaches basic nutrients such as calcium and magnesium, lowering the pH.
  • Fertilizer: Over-application of certain fertilizers, particularly those high in nitrogen, can lead to soil acidification over time.
  • Soil composition: The natural composition of your soil, including the types of minerals and organic matter present, can also impact its pH. For instance, soil with high amounts of clay or organic material tends to hold more acidity.
  • Pollution: Acid rain, resulting from pollution, can lower soil pH, particularly in industrial or urban areas.

Why Is Soil pH Testing Important?

Regular soil pH testing helps you maintain the delicate balance that keeps your lawn healthy and vibrant. Over time, various factors, including fertilizer application and organic matter breakdown, can alter the pH of your soil. Routinely testing pH levels empowers you to catch these shifts early and take corrective action before they impact your lawn.

Having the appropriate pH also slows thatch build-up, which can choke growth and reduce “turf density” – the number of grass blades per square feet. The proper pH also reduces the possibility of lawn fungus problems.

Lawn Doctor will check the pH of your lawn and recommend the specific treatment necessary, if any, based on the results.
