How to Have a Better Backyard

“During COVID, the inadequacies of our backyard became really clear to us,” Danny said. “We’re trying to work from home, the kids are doing remote schooling, there’s just no place for everyone in the house – but outside, there’s no shade and hardly any grass.”

“No grass but plenty of mosquitoes,” Danny’s daughter Janet said, pointing toward a small stream that borders the property. “Dad wants us outside with all these bloodsuckers!”

“Anyway,” Danny said with a laugh, “I’m thinking it’s time to improve the backyard. It should be a pleasant place to hang out, and I don’t want to have to do a ton of maintenance. What’s involved in making this happen?”

How to Have a Better Backyard

As a local lawn service in Danny’s hometown of Hyde Park, we’re very familiar with local growing conditions. In terms of specific issues, we can talk about mosquito prevention, adding shade to the landscape, and, our particular specialty, getting healthy grass to grow.

Mosquito prevention is an ongoing task for property owners with streams, ditches, or other landscape features that are always wet. Mitigation techniques include minimizing the amount of standing water on the property as much as possible, as well as the spraying of family and pet safe products to eliminate developing and adult mosquitoes. This spraying needs to be repeated throughout the warm weather season, more frequently in years with lots of rain.

Adding share to the landscape can be addressed by adding trees and large shrubbery to the landscape. Additionally, it’s always worth considering having a local contractor build a gazebo, screen house, or other shade feature. Screen houses have an additional mosquito-control function.

Finally, getting a great lawn established – our specialty. It sounds like some soil amendments – adding vital nutrition to the lawn – would be the first step, followed by power seeding and fertilizer throughout the growing season. While it’s a little early to begin the process, it’s not too soon to get your project on the books. Here’s how to get in touch.
