Fall Fertilizing: The Secret to a Really Great Looking Lawn

What’s the difference between a green, lush lawn and a yard full of weeds and bare spots? One common answer: fertilizer. By providing the vital minerals and nutrients grass needs to grow, fertilizer helps you achieve an Instagram-ready lawn.

When is the right time to fertilize the lawn?

As a Norwood lawn care company, we advise homeowners to try for at least three fertilizations during the year. The spring fertilization gives your grass a jump start for the season to come. The mid-summer fertilization keeps the lawn going strong. And the fall fertilization – which you probably should schedule now! – gives your lawn a good dose of nutrition to carry the grass during the long, cold winter.

Doesn’t grass die during the winter?

Ideally, no. Grass becomes dormant over the winter, which means it’s still alive but in pause mode. During dormancy, grass still requires nutrition, in order to fend off the damaging effects of cold and snow. The more nutrition the grass has available, the better it will survive the winter. That’s why fall fertilization is so important.

What is lawn aeration?

In situations where a homeowner’s lawn is very compacted – think super hard, like clay – we recommend lawn aeration prior to fertilization. Lawn aeration is the process of mechanically introducing thousands of small holes (each roughly the size of a pencil eraser) into your lawn to allow for the easy permeation of fertilizer, oxygen, and rainwater to your grass’ root system.
