Don’t over-water. Too much watering can spell trouble for lawns. When you water just a little bit on a regular basis, it encourages shallow root growth. Instead, strive for deep and infrequent watering.
In addition, the time of day you water matters. Aim for early morning so moisture doesn’t evaporate under the hot sun or sit on grass blades overnight. This can lead to fungal infections and insect invasions.
Don’t over-fertilize. Your lawn might start to wilt under Charleston’s harsh summer temperatures. But that doesn’t mean you should apply more fertilizer. Doing so can actually burn your lawn in the heat of the season. Likewise, it encourages fast growth, which can further harm an already drought-stressed lawn.
Do mow with care. How you mow plays a big part in summer lawn health. Aim for less than 1/3 off your total height. Also, leave grass clippings behind to maintain good moisture levels.
Do tackle tough weeds. Seeing weeds cropping up? If there are just a few, simply hand pull them out, making sure you get to the root to avoid re-growth. If, however, you’re noticing an infestation, use a post-emergent product to suppress them.

When you’re noticing signs – in the form of circular, dead, or dying patches – it’s important to act quickly. This fungal disease can be deadly if not treated. The best approach is to apply fertilizer with potassium and nitrogen to improve disease resistance. Be sure to keep the area dry, too, and don’t walk on it. If you don’t notice signs clearing up, use a fungicide to treat the affected areas.
