Spring Lawn Care Essentials – How to Assess Your Yard’s Status

While the daily headlines are ever changing, the rhythm of nature continues steadily on. Springtime is the time that many Cohasset homeowners first take stock of what’s happened to the yard over the course of the previous six months. It wasn’t the toughest winter ever, but there were some significant weather events that could have had a toll on your landscape.

Here’s what you want to look for when you’re checking out your yard:

The condition of your trees and shrubs.

Trees and shrubs are vulnerable to heavy snows and strong winds. Major damage such as broken limbs or snapped trunks is usually immediately apparent. Take a closer look to make sure there’s not smaller damage that’s not visible at first glance: sometimes the prompt attention of a tree care specialist can save trees that would otherwise be lost. You’ll also want to keep an eye out for any signs of tree diseases, insect infestation, or rot.

The health of the grass.

From the homeowner’s perspective, what you want to see is a healthy green lawn free from bare patches or weeds. There are many different types of diseases that impact grass, most of which result in the lawn having an unsightly mottled appearance. Another issue to watch for: lawn fungus. Identifying and taking steps to treat these issues in the spring is the best way to enjoy a great lawn all summer.

Places for mosquitos to congregate.

Any where a puddle can form is a place where disease-carrying mosquitoes can be born. Take note of any area where there’s standing water. Short-lived puddles that form immediately after a rain storm and disappear aren’t your issue here: you want to be aware of areas that stay wet for a prolonged period of several days or  more.
