Lawn Weed Control on Long Island: Stop Invaders with a Treatment Plan

Close up of blades of grass showing lawn weed control in Long IslandWeeds can be difficult to treat for a variety of reasons. One of the biggest, though, is that there’s no single lawn weed control solution that’s effective against all the varieties you commonly see on Long Island. Rather, it takes a varied approach to gain the upper hand and get them out of your yard. Don’t know where to begin? Here are a few straightforward steps you can take to limit their growth substantially this outdoor season:

Step 1: Deal with damage or disease. Underlying problems in your lawn, such as improper pH and soil compaction, all lead to weeds. Grass doesn’t grow well under these conditions; however, heartier weeds are more resilient to them. That’s why, when you’re seeing signs of trouble, like standing water, discoloration, or bare spots, it’s important to act fast and fix them.

Step 2: Get to weeds before they emerge. On Long Island, early spring is a good time to apply a pre-emergent lawn weed control product that targets these plants at the initial stages of development. For this treatment to be effective, though, it must be timed correctly and delivered before germination, which happens when soil temperatures are around 65 degrees for several consecutive days.

Step 3: Fuel root and shoot development. Help your yard strengthen its natural defense system with regular fertilization treatments, beginning in spring. Not only will these fuel growth, but they’ll also enable your lawn to recover from any winter injury and prepare for the heat and drought conditions ahead during Long Island’s summer season.

Step 4: Practice proper lawn management. Two of the biggest mistakes homeowners make in their yards that cause weeds to spread involve mowing and watering. Mow too short and you’ll stress grass tremendously. Likewise, shallow watering weakens roots. Instead, when you cut, don’t take off more than 1/3 of the height each time. In addition, water infrequently, but heavily, so moisture reaches below the root system, encouraging roots to grow further into the soil.
