Lawn Weed Control in Brentwood: Stop Invaders with a Treatment Plan

Close up of blades of grass showing lawn weed control in BrentwoodYour spring yard care list is full of tasks. One of the most important for homeowners across the Brentwood, NH area is lawn weed control. By understanding the invaders that are most prone to attack and how to defend your turf, you can enjoy a better-looking lawn – and a better growing season – in the months ahead.

In SE New Hampshire and across the U.S., weeds tend to fall into two categories and require different treatment approaches. These include:

  • Grassy, such as crabgrass, goosegrass, and quackgrass. These weeds pose a challenge because, biologically speaking, they’re similar to the grass in your yard. They look alike and tend to favor the same conditions. So what you give your lawn to support it can also promote healthy growth for grassy weeds. Therefore, the best way to treat them is when they’re smallest and most vulnerable, as young plants below the soil’s surface. To do so, apply a granular pre-emergent lawn weed control product during the early spring season.
  • Broadleaf, like dandelion, wild violet, chickweed, and purslane. Weeds that fall into this category vary widely in how they look; however, they generally have broader leaves, a network of veins, and stand out against the grass in your lawn as a result. When you’re seeing them surface and spread, direct leaf contact using a post-emergent product works best. Just make sure you read the instructions carefully and follow the guidelines for rates and timing.

In addition to these treatments, adhering to good maintenance practices is key to effective control. If your yard isn’t well cared for, then it’s going to be prone to more weeds no matter how much herbicide you apply. So be mindful about mowing, never cutting off more than 1/3 of the height at a time; water deeply rather than lightly; and fertilize regularly, around six to eight times during the growing season.
