Be On The Lookout: Common Early Spring Lawn Problems

As the snow starts to melt in our southwestern Michigan area, oftentimes not until early to mid March, it is important to keep an eye out for common early spring lawn problems in our Hudsonville and Holland Area lawns.

When putting time, effort and money into your lawn each season it is important to make sure the health of the lawn remains. Unfortunately, regardless of the quality of your lawn care there is always the possibility that something may slip by. See below on key factors to watch for entering the Spring.

Common Early Spring Lawn Problems: Snow Mold
Snow mold is a fungal disease that flourishes in our early spring temperatures in the Jenison, Hudsonville and Holland Areas. You can see snow mold most commonly in pink or gray forms. This can be treated simply oftentimes by raking in the not-so-severe circumstances. For more severe circumstances, you should at minimum treat this with a fungicide, but for best results call your local lawn care company.

Common Early Spring Lawn Problems: Debris on the Lawn Causing Brown Grass

Sometimes, going into winter, we can find ourselves too busy to get that patio brought in or to get the lawn raked and the kids’ toys out of the lawn. When the snow comes in, it will begin to weigh down on those items causing it to cover and press the grass into the ground. While grass can be hardy, this kind of damage can cause a lawn to thin and die in areas. It is important to rake it up as cautiously as possible and clean up the items off the lawn. This is a very important time when your grass needs access to the sunlight and oxygen available as it enters the growing season.

Common Early Spring Lawn Problems: Grass is Too Long And Matted

When you find your grass seeming to be folded over onto itself, or matted down because it was not mowed short enough before snowfall this can pose a risk to disease. This is the most common cause of snow mold. In more severe cases this may cause brown patches.

Common Early Spring Lawn Problems: Some Areas of the Lawn are Brown

In many lawns, it is common to see a variety of grass. Varieties of grass commonly include bluegrass, rye grass, fescue, bermuda and bent grass. Because these are different grasses, they will come out of dormancy at different times. This is common to see in early spring. As the temperatures gradually warm up, grasses like bluegrass and ryegrass will come back first followed by grasses like fescue, bermuda and bent grass. This will begin to resolve itself as the temperatures continue to increase and the entire lawn comes out of dormancy.
