Soil PH and Lime

At Lawn Doctor, we recommend taking a soil sample yearly to find out the soil pH and what is needed for best results in maintaining your lawn. Through years of sampling, we have found that lawns in the Charleston area can have a high or a low pH. Therefore, we don’t recommend adding amenities without a soil test. However, since we have been a local business for over 30 years, we could make an educated guess based on your specific location, if you choose not to get a sample. The soil pH determines how well the nutrients will be available to the turf grass. Lawn Doctor uses dolomitic lime because it contains calcium and magnesium which is typically deficient in the Lowcountry.

Above is a picture of typical lime bag and the actual lime pellets that we would spread on your lawn. Note; they are not easy to see once we spread it on the lawn. Soil sampling can be done at anytime during the year. However, we recommend taking soil samples in the beginning of the year during service #1, and following up with the recommendations on the #2 and #3 services. This will help get the proper materials down when the grass is coming out of dormancy and at the onset of the growing season.
