Lawn Disease Control Tips for Garner-Area Homeowners

extremely green grass photo fills entire frame showing lawn disease control in GarnerLawn diseases can take on all kinds of forms, but the end result is always the same: damage to your lawn. As local lawn disease control experts in the Garner, NC area, Lawn Doctor of Southern Wake County knows that once they take root, they can be tough to get rid of. The good news is that with the right approach – a more proactive one – you can protect your lawn from disease and prevent the risk of infection. Here’s how:

  • Plant disease-resistant varieties of grass seed in your lawn. Other factors to consider when choosing the right grass seed include sunlight, soil type, and our Southern Wake County climate conditions.
  • Water in the early morning. Avoid watering at night when your grass will stay wet longer, opening it up to the possibility of infection.
  • Keep grass short, but not too short. The rule of thumb is not to mow more than a third off your grass blades at any one time.  NCSU recommends that tall fescue grass be cut at a height of 3.5 – 4 inches and all warm season grasses (bermuda, centipede, zoysia etc.) be cut so that the mower blades don’t hit the dirt at any point.  Most customers cut at 2 – 2.5 inches.  Never cut tall fescue this short!  The settings on your mower are NOT in inches in almost all cases, to determine your actual cutting height you should measure from a concrete drive or sidewalk to the bottom of the mower deck.
  • Aerate your lawn. Doing so will get rid of any heavy surface thatch, where infections can establish and spread. Aeration also cuts down on compaction, so grass can take in more key essentials and grow in stronger and healthier.
  • Fertilize your lawn. Fertilize on a regular basis so it has the proper nourishment. A well-fed lawn means more vigorous growth and better natural defenses against disease.
  • Clean up your yard.  Be sure your yard is kept clean of clippings, debris, and other messes, such as thick layers of wet leaves.
  • Level off uneven areas. Uneven areas in your lawn allow water to pool and leaves your grass wet, which often leads to lawn disease.

Despite your best efforts, aggressive diseases can sometimes gain a foothold in your lawn. If this happens to you – and you’re not sure what to do next – call Lawn Doctor of Southern Wake County.
