Want a Healthy Lawn? Weed Control Matters

When it comes to weeds in your lawn and landscape, some are simply ugly to look at. Others, though, are more than that and can actually damage your lawn. As they grow and get established, theystart competing with your lawn for needed nutrients, water and sunlight. And as they spread, your grass also has less room to grow in.

But before you take action with products or strategies, it’s important to understand the types of weeds you’re dealing with. For instance, the weeds in your lawn can be:

  • Grassy or broadleaf. Grassy weeds look similar to your grass and grow under the same conditions. The most prevalent kind by far is crabgrass. Broadleaf weeds, instead, have many different looks, but all with wide, flat leaves. Some, like dandelion and wild violet, can even flower. Other types include clover, purslane and chickweed.
  • Perennial or annual. Different weeds also have different lifecycles. In fact, both grassy and broadleaf weeds can be either perennial or annual. With perennial weeds, they grow back over the course of multiple years. Annual weeds, however, can grow in several times, but just during one year.
  • Warm-season or cool-season. Besides varying lifecycles, weeds also have a variety of different growing seasons, depending on the type. If a weed is warm-season that simply means it likes the warmer temperatures of spring and summer. Cool-season weeds, however, grow best during fall through spring.
