Scalping Your Lawn

extremely green grass photo fills entire frame.Scalping is the removal of the dead over-wintered grass that has insulated your turf this winter.

After the threat of a severe freeze, generally after about March 15th , scalp your lawn. Mow it as low as possible without striking the soil with the mower blade. Bag or rake up this dead material and dispose of it. (This material is not recommended for mulch in the garden).

Scalping before the turf greens up will help avoid thatch build-up problems. It will also expose the soil to sunlight. The soil will warm more quickly allowing your lawn to green up more quickly.

*Not recommended for St. Augustine or Centipede lawns.
