Continue mowing. In late fall, you can lower your mower blades slightly and cut your grass shorter. Just remember to follow the 1/3 rule: Don’t cut off more than 1/3 of your grass height at any one time. If you need to gradually lower your blades to follow that rule, then do that. On your last cut for the season, cut your lawn slightly shorter. This will open it up to more sunlight and minimize browning leaf blades.
Aerate your lawn. When soil is compacted, nutrients, sunlight and water can’t reach grass roots, causing weak growth and color. However, aerating the soil in your lawn opens up new pathways and lets your lawn breathe again. Fall is a good time to perform this important task.
Seed your lawn. If you have thinning areas, or sparse grass throughout, spot or power seed your lawn. This way, seeds will have a chance to germinate and grow strong root systems before frigid winter temperatures hit.
Feed and apply weed control in your lawn. In the fall, apply fertilizer to your lawn to ensure it has sufficient nutrient reserves to grow in healthier and stronger come spring. Likewise, if you applied a pre-emergent herbicide in spring, deliver a second application in fall to combat weed seeds that made their way into your lawn during summer months.
Clean up your lawn. A layer of wet leaves on your lawn provides a breeding ground for mold and fungal diseases. That’s why it’s important to rake up leaves as they start falling into your lawn and garden beds. It’s also important to cut back perennial plants and remove annuals from your garden.
