We all know the feeling: you’re enjoying time in the yard, and suddenly you’re thinking about ticks. Unlike some pests that are simply annoying, ticks carry real risks for your family and pets. The good news? There’s a lot you can do to protect your outdoor spaces and the people (and pets) who love them.
Ticks Aren’t Random — They’re Hiding with Purpose
Ticks don’t like the sun. They thrive in dark, shady, moist areas. Think along fence lines, under shrubs, at the edge of the lawn, in tall grass, or around brush piles. We often picture ticks falling from trees, but more often they grab on from below, waiting for someone to brush past tall grass or undergrowth.
Ways to Make Your Yard Less Tick-Friendly
1. Clean Up the Yard
Ticks hate sunny, dry environments. The more you prune back overgrown vegetation and remove brush or debris, the fewer spots they have to call home. Open up shady areas by trimming trees and shrubs, especially around the edges of your lawn.
2. Mow Regularly
Ticks use tall grass as highways. Keeping your lawn trimmed (3.5–4 inches is ideal) not only improves its health—it also makes it harder for ticks to move around unnoticed.
3. Plant with Purpose
Believe it or not, some plants naturally repel ticks! Mint, lavender, rosemary, marigolds, and citronella grass can help discourage ticks, mosquitoes, and even fleas. They’re low maintenance and smell great, too. Mulched beds building a 3 foot barrier between lawn space and woods are a great protective measure.
4. Keep Deer Away
Deer are one of the main carriers that bring ticks into your space. Our Deer Repellent services can help keep them away from your landscape. You can also evaluate your planting choices—some ornamentals are irresistible to deer and may need to go.

5. Targeted Tick Control Treatments
We offer Yard Armour tick and mosquito treatments that focus on known tick hotspots in your yard. Treatments are timed to hit peak activity and reduce the tick population where they live.

Personal Protection Tips
Even with a well-maintained yard, ticks can show up. Here’s how to protect yourself and your family:
- Wear light-colored clothing so ticks are easier to spot
- Cover up when in grassy or wooded areas: long sleeves, pants, socks, and even a hat
- Use repellents when in wooded areas and tall grasses — DEET works well, but natural options with soybean oil or botanical blends are great, too (just reapply often)
- Always do tick checks after outdoor time—especially on kids and pets. Behind the ears, under the arms, waistband, and hairlines are common hiding spots.
