Tony’s Tips for November 2018

As we turn our attention towards the holidays, I look back and sigh with some relief that the summer/fall seasons are almost over.  Yes, we have some more work to do (fertilizer and lime applications); yet, I have never experienced such a difficult time trying to schedule work.  Thank you for your patience and understanding through this frustrating couple of months.  I know my guys are looking forward  to a more routine work schedule this November.

LAWN CARE

The leaves are coming down.  Are you ready to deal with them?  What is the best method for handing leaves?  Simply remove them on a regular basis, so wet matted leaves are not smothering your grass – especially new seedlings!  A blower works the best.

We have been reminding clients about the need to continue watering newly seeded areas.  Nothing grows without water!  How long should you continue to lightly water for the new grass?  This depends on rainfall and cold temperatures.  Stop watering when we have consistent nighttime temperatures in the low 30’s.

Last cut.  Your lawn will start slowing down as the temperatures stay cool.  Generally, the last cutting should be on notch lower than your normal cutting height – not lower than two and a half inches.

Lime – Fall is an excellent time to apply limestone on your lawn.  The benefits include:  improved fertilizer uptake, reduced disease problems, and thatch reduction.  Call the office or ask your technician about lime. 410.526.6400

Recipe from Angel : Sweet & Spicy Cranberry Cocktail meatballs

Ingredients

For the Meatballs:

  • 2 lbs. ground beef
  • 1c. bread crumbs
  • 2 eggs slightly beaten
  • 2 T. Sweet Chili Sauce
  • 2 T. Worcestershire Sauce
  • 2 T. minced onion (optional)
  • ½ t. salt

For the Cranberry Pepper Jelly Sauce:

  • 10oz. jar Hot Pepper Jelly
  • 12oz. jar Chili Sauce
  • 8oz. can Jellied Cranberry Sauce
  • 2 T. dark brown sugar
  • juice from 1/2 lemon

Instructions

For the Meatballs:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, bread crumbs, eggs, chili sauce, Worcestershire Sauce, onion and salt. Mix until all ingredients are incorporated but do not overwork the mixture or the meatballs will be tough.
  3. Form into 1½ inch meatballs and place on the prepared baking sheet. Leave at least 1-inch space between meatballs.
  4. Cook at 350 F for 10 minutes then turn each meatball over. Cook another 10-15 minutes or until meatballs are cooked through. Remove from oven.
  5. While meatballs are cooking, prepare the sauce.

For the Sauce:

  1. In a large skillet over low heat, combine all sauce ingredients. Stir until well blended then remove from heat until the meatballs are ready.
  2. When meatballs are cooked, place them in the sauce in the skillet and simmer for 1-hour or until sauce has thickened.
