Covering. After you plant grass seed, it’s time to cover it up. This can be accomplished either by laying one quarter inch of new topsoil on top of your seed or by raking grass seed down approximately one quarter inch under the surface. This depth will stop grass seed from getting washed away while also keeping it close enough to the surface to get the sunlight it needs.
Watering. Watering too often or not often enough is a common mistake when it comes to growing grass from seeds. Watering new grass seed twice or three times a day is plenty, and make sure to ease off of watering if you notice the appearance of any puddles.
