Winterizer Application: According to many university turf programs, the winterizing application is one of the most important parts of lawn care. Cornell University stated it was the 3rd most important fertilizing application of the year and other turf care professionals believe it’s the most important fertilization of the year.
Timing of the Winterizer Application is Important. Some put Winterizer down in early- to mid-September. However, most professionals agree that it should be done when the lawn’s shoot growth is finished but the roots are still actively taking up nutrients, which happens when the soil temp under the turf is still in the upper 30s and 40s. This varies depending on the fall weather, but in the Naperville area the soil temperatures do not reach the low 40s and high 30s until October and continue down into the mid to low 30s sometime in mid-December.
Why is it Winterizer Recommended? Short answer: it’s great for your lawn! Quickly absorbed nitrogen is stored in the newly grown fall roots.
