Keep in mind throughout the following discussion the definition of weed. A weed is a plant out of place.

The best defense against weeds is a thick healthy lawn. A thick healthy lawn starts with proper care. We educate our customers on the importance of proper cultural care practices including mowing, watering, and trimming. Our fertilization and weed control program works best when complemented by the homeowner’s proper care of the lawn.

Our fertilization and weed control program includes:

  • Pre-emergent weed control
    • Product that primarily targets annual grassy weeds (mainly crab grass) and designed to keep weed seeds from germinating
    • Coverage is important especially along edges and thin and bare areas in the turf especially in sunny areas
    • Cannot be applied to areas where you may be planning to seed (it keeps seed from germinating)
  • Post emergent weed control at every service
    • The products are selective meaning that they are safe to use over turfgrass
    • Multiple products targeting annual, bi-annual, and perennial, grassy, grass-like, and broadleaf weeds once they have emerged
    • They are NOT preventative; the weeds must have some visible vegetative structure to absorb the herbicide

Important Considerations for Weed Control

  • Outside of pre-emergent weed control which targets a small subset of grassy weeds (crab grass), weed control is NOT preventative – there is no way to prevent weeds except through proper care and consistent weed control treatment
  • Under ideal conditions, when we start treating a lawn, we see that lawn become 95% weed free in approximately 2 years
  • While a single weed control application will make a noticeable difference in a lawn with heavy weeds, any progress made will be lost without follow up applications
  • Remember, a weed is a plant out of place
  • A number of types of native grasses that may show up in your lawn, while they may fit the above definition of weed, have the same characteristics of grasses and are NOT crab grass and as such, the selective weed control products we are using do not work on them. Here are several common problem grasses:

    • Tall/Coarse fescue – NOT CRAB GRASS
      Fescue 1  Fescue 2  Fescue 3

    • Quackgrass
      Quackgrass 1   Quackgrass 2   Quackgrass 3

    • Roughstalk Bluegrass – Poa Trivialis
      Roughstalk 1   Roughstalk 2    Roughstalk 3

    • Ornamental grasses from landscape bed that have seeded into lawn
      Ornamental 1   Ornamental 2

    • Crabgrass for comparison
      Crabgrass 1   crabgrass 2    Crabgrass 3

  • Timing of weed control is also important
