Tips for Grass Care in St. Charles: What to Do Between Treatments

At Lawn Doctor of Batavia-Aurora, we help our customers to build and maintain a beautiful lawn with grass care services and people you can trust in St. Charles, Naperville, and other nearby areas in IL. However, we are typically only on each lawn once every 4 to 6 weeks, so to keep your grass healthy between visits, here are a few helpful suggestions on what to do and what to avoid when caring for your lawn.

  • Mow high. More leaf area, more photosynthesis, and more food produces a healthier plant. Mowing short exposes the soil, allowing moisture to evaporate faster, and weed seeds and sunlight to reach the soil more easily, which leads to even more weeds. You can reduce the use of herbicides by keeping your turf longer.
  • Never mow more than 1/3 of the grass blade per mowing. Mowing too much of the plant at one time is perhaps the most stressful action that can be done to the grass plant. When a plant is under stress it tends to stop growing and become much more susceptible to disease and insects.
  • Mow your lawn with sharp blades. Make sure your lawn mower blades are sharpened at least once a season. This ensures they are not tearing or tugging at grass, potentially damaging it. Torn tips expose the grass plants to excess water loss and disease.
  • Water longer and less frequently. Deep yet infrequent watering is best. Watering lightly will produce a shallow root system and grass plants that are less resilient.
  • Water in the morning only. Aim to water early between 6am and 10am to make the most efficient use of the water and to allow the grass blades to dry before nighttime. Nighttime watering promotes disease.
  • Minimize heavy traffic on your lawn as much as possible. Compacted soil is difficult for roots to grow through and makes it more difficult for the turf to spread.
  • Plant the right turf type in the proper locations. If you do need to repair places in your lawn, make sure that you select the best seed for the location. While you want it to match your existing lawn as much as possible, you do not want to plant a shade-loving turf type in a full sun location and vice versa.
