Lawn Weed Control in Fairfield County: Stop Invaders with a Treatment Plan

Close up of blades of grass showing lawn weed control in Fairfield CountyWhether you own a home in Fairfield County, CT or Westchester County, NY, lawn weed control is a fact of life. In many cases, this can be due to underlying problems or poor maintenance practices. But with the right treatment plan this spring, it doesn’t have to be such a hassle in the seasons ahead. To help you, here are four steps to take:

Step 1. Mow frequently and higher. Keep those grass blades longer when you’re mowing. Though it’s tempting to cut short, doing so will limit carbohydrate production, thereby reducing energy reserves, and also enabling those developing weeds to absorb more sunlight and water.

Step 2. Aerate your lawn. Some types of weeds, like dandelions, can grow in compacted soil. For most grasses, though, they’ll eventually suffocate in this kind of environment. To alleviate it, aerate your lawn to open up avenues for air, water, and nutrients to move down below, to roots.

Step 3. Apply fertilization in early spring. Fertilizing is another key step to improving the health and appearance of your lawn, as well as strengthening natural defenses. Timing it right depends on the grasses you have, but early spring is generally ideal and then again several weeks later. Just make sure you don’t apply too much, which can encourage heavy top growth without the root system to support it.

Step 4. Treat your lawn with a pre-emergent. Many types of lawn weeds germinate in early spring in both cool- and warm-season grasses. That’s why a pre-emergent herbicide can make such a big difference. It targets these developing seeds with lawn weed control prior to germination, which occurs in the Fairfield County area once soil temperatures hit around 65 degrees.
