Power Seeding or Hydro-Seeding?

At Lawn Doctor of Metro West and North Shore, we always tell our clients that the method you choose when seeding your yard can have a big impact on the thickness and health of your lawn. Two of the more popular methods for seeding are power seeding and hydro-seeding. Unfortunately, many lawn care companies hype the advantages of one over the other without informing homeowners what the difference really is between these two methods.

Lawn Doctor of Metro West and North Shore offers professional power seeding for clients in Melrose, Salem, and the rest of Northshore MA. After years of seeing the results produced by power seeding vs. hydro-seeding, we’re confident you’ll enjoy a healthier, more beautiful lawn with seeding from Lawn Doctor of Metro West and North Shore.

Power Seeding vs. Hydro-Seeding: The Difference

Power seeding and hydro-seeding are similar to one another in a number of ways. Both methods use the same four key ingredients: seed, water, fertilizer, and mulch. The difference is how those ingredients are applied.

  • With Power Seeding… these ingredients are applied separately. First, the seed is applied to the soil, then the water, fertilizer, and mulch in separate applications.
  • With Hydro-Seeding… these ingredients are mixed together into a slurry (often using some form of adhesive) and then sprayed in a mixture onto the soil.

This means that hydro-seeding requires a single application of pre-mixed materials. As a result, it can be easily applied by less-experienced lawn care technicians. But hydro-seeding has one key disadvantage: because the seed is mixed in with other materials, fewer seeds make strong contact with the soil.

With power seeding, seed is applied directly to the soil. This means strong seed-to-soil contact. While a seemingly small distinction, the contact between seed and soil is key to retaining water and promoting proper growth. As a result, power seeding leads to thicker, healthier results on a more consistent basis.
