Water less frequently and more deeply. When your grass starts to wilt and brown, it’s tempting to water it a little each day. But this actually sets the stage for root growth near the surface of the soil. Shallow roots make your lawn more susceptible to all kinds of diseases, not to mention weeds and insects. Instead, when your grass is brown and dry, water it deeply once a week, for about an hour.
Even if your grass still looks brown, don’t worry too much. It’s likely just dormant and will come back to life with more regular rainfall and cooler temperatures.
Water before 9 a.m. The best time to water your lawn is early in the morning, ideally before 9 a.m. Any later than that and water droplets will simply evaporate in the hot sun. If you water at night, on the other hand, your grass will stay wet, opening it up to potential infections from diseases, as well as attacks by insects and other pests.
