Our Grass Growing Yard Care Tips

Getting grass to grow from seed seems like a straightforward process, but there are several factors involved that need to be taken into account to get good results. Here’s a quick look at some of our most helpful grass growing tips from our yard care team in Carroll County:

Timing

A common misconception is that Spring is the best time to plant grass seed in Carroll County. Growing grass from seed is usually best accomplished in the late summer or early fall. Seed planted in the spring usually doesn’t make it through the summer weather without dying out from heat and drought stress or being out-competed by weeds. September plantings offer time for new grass to get established prior to having to deal with hot summer weather, and allows for weed control applications the following spring.

Laying Down Seed

When it comes to laying down grass seed, the first step is preparing your soil. For your grass seeds to thrive, you’ll want nutrient-rich soil that’s between 6.0 – 7.0 on the pH scale. And when you’re applying seed to your lawn, seed to soil contact is key. One option is to rake the soil to a depth of about 3/4 inch, loosening a seed bed for new, tender roots to grow into. Once you’ve loosened the top layer of soil, apply your seed evenly, ideally with a spreader. Then lightly rake new seed into the top 1/4 inch of soil. This specific depth allows your grass seed to access the sunlight it needs to germinate while remaining deep enough to not get washed away during watering.

Watering

Watering may seem like the simplest step, but it’s where seeding efforts usually fail. For the first 2 weeks, water new grass seed 10-15 minutes per area per day, using a sprinkler or until the soil is moist but not soggy. After 2 weeks, switch to 15-20 minutes per area every other day for a week. Water for the following week for 20-25 minutes per area 3 times. Eventually, the goal is 40-45 minutes per area once a week. Watering too much or too little is easy to do, but it can have a major effect on grass seed development. Be sure to keep fallen leaves off the new grass as they can become wet or matted and will smother new tender shoots.
