Q&A: Grub Control

What are grubs?

Grubs are the larvae of various beetles, such as Japanese beetles, June bugs, and European chafers. Grubs live in the soil and feed on the roots of grass and plants.

How do I know if I have a grub problem?

Signs include:

  • Patches of dead or dying grass that can be rolled back like a carpet
  • Increased animal activity (skunks, racoons, birds) digging up the lawn
  • Grass that feels spongy when walked on
  • Visual confirmation of grubs (typically C-shaped and white) under the soil

When should I treat for grubs?

The best time is late Spring to Mid Summer, when newly hatched grubs are small and feeding. Early Spring and  after Mid Summer treatments are less effective because mature grubs are harder to kill.

What types of grub control treatments are available?

Depending on the life cycle stage of the grubs:

  • Preventive treatments:Apply in late Spring to early Summer to prevent grubs from hatching.
  • Curative treatments: Use in mid to late Summer to early Fall if you already have an infestation.

Note: Grub control products also help manage army worms.
