Mole Cricket Control

Mole Cricket Control (Prevention + Curative Treatments)

Stop Mole Cricket Damage Before It Spreads

If your lawn feels spongy underfoot, has thinning areas, or you’re seeing tunneling just below the surface—mole crickets may already be active in your lawn.

Unlike other pests, mole crickets don’t just feed—they tunnel through the soil, disrupting roots and creating instability in your turf.

Left untreated, this can lead to thinning grass, uneven surfaces, and turf that struggles to recover.

At Lawn Doctor, we take a proactive approach to mole cricket control—but when activity shows up, we have the tools to stop the damage quickly.

Preventative vs Curative Mole Cricket Control

Mole cricket activity is typically managed as part of our lawn care program. However, there are times when additional treatment is needed.

Preventative Control (Built Into Our Program)

We include targeted mole cricket applications as part of our program to help manage populations throughout their life cycle.

  • Spring: Treatment aimed at younger mole crickets before they mature and cause significant damage
  • Fall: Application to help suppress populations heading into the next season
  • Helps reduce mole cricket populations early
  • Reduces the likelihood of tunneling and root disruption
  • Provides a baseline level of protection as part of your program

The goal is simple—keep populations low so damage never becomes noticeable.

It’s important to understand that this is a management strategy, not a full-season guarantee—especially in lawns more prone to mole cricket activity.

Curative Treatments (When You Have Active Mole Cricket Activity)

Even with prevention in place, there are times when additional treatment is needed—especially in higher-pressure lawns like Zoysia and Bahia.

If mole crickets are actively tunneling, preventative treatments won’t act fast enough. That’s when we apply a targeted treatment designed specifically to bring active populations under control quickly.

Signs you may need a curative treatment:

  • Raised tunnels or soft, spongy areas in the lawn
  • Thinning turf in irregular patterns
  • Areas that feel unstable when walking

Curative treatments are designed to:

  • Stop active tunneling quickly
  • Reduce population pressure fast
  • Help the lawn stabilize and recover

Our Approach to Mole Cricket Control (Built Around Prevention First)

We don’t rely on a one-size-fits-all approach. We use a combination of preventative and curative strategies based on turf type, timing, and observed activity.

Typical seasonal approach:

  • Spring: Treatment targeting younger mole crickets early in their life cycle
  • Fall: Program-based application to help suppress populations
  • During Season: Monitoring for activity, especially in Zoysia and Bahia lawns

If we see active mole cricket pressure, we may recommend an additional treatment outside of the standard program to quickly bring the issue under control using specialized products designed for fast knockdown of active populations.

Where Mole Crickets Are Most Common

Mole crickets are most commonly found in Zoysia and Bahia lawns. They are much less common in St. Augustine, which is why not every lawn experiences issues.

If you have Zoysia or Bahia, your risk is higher—and monitoring becomes more important.

Why Mole Cricket Prevention Isn’t Always 100%

“If I’m on a program, can I still get mole crickets?”

The reality is—no preventative program can guarantee zero activity 100% of the time.

Here’s why:

  • Pest pressure can vary from year to year
  • Environmental conditions influence activity levels
  • Some areas may experience higher localized pressure

Our preventative treatments are designed to greatly reduce the likelihood and severity of activity—and in most cases, they do exactly that.

However, if mole crickets do show up, they are typically:

  • Less widespread
  • Less damaging
  • Much easier to control quickly

That’s where curative treatments come in. Instead of letting the problem get worse, we can step in early and get the lawn back on track.

Why Mole Crickets Are a Bigger Problem Than They Look

Mole crickets damage lawns in two ways:

  • Feeding on roots
  • Tunneling through the soil

This combination weakens turf structure and can cause lawns to feel soft, uneven, and unstable.

Without proper control:

  • Turf becomes thin and weak
  • Root systems are disrupted
  • Recovery becomes more difficult during heat and stress

In many cases, what looks like general lawn decline is actually mole cricket activity happening below the surface.

Why DIY Mole Cricket Control Falls Short

Mole cricket control isn’t just about applying a product—it’s about timing, detection, and using the right approach.

Common DIY issues:

  • Missing early signs of activity
  • Treating too late after damage has spread
  • Using products that don’t act quickly enough for active infestations

By the time most homeowners realize there’s an issue, damage is already underway.

When Should You Treat for Mole Crickets?

  • Preventative: Spring through summer
  • Curative: As soon as activity is noticed

We monitor conditions and adjust timing to ensure the best results.

Service Availability

Mole cricket control services are offered exclusively to our existing lawn care customers.

This allows us to:

  • Monitor your lawn over time
  • Apply treatments at the correct timing
  • Prevent issues before they become severe

If you’re not currently a customer, we’ll start with a lawn evaluation and build a program that supports proper pest control.
