COMMON LAWN QUESTIONS
Crabgrass is a fast-spreading annual weed that thrives anywhere your lawn is thin, stressed, or bare. Its seeds lie dormant in the soil until conditions are just right—typically during warm weather. Heat, drought stress, mowing the grass too short, and compacted soil all create openings where crabgrass can easily take hold and flourish.Crabgrass grows aggressively because it loves hot, sunny areas and can outcompete healthy grass if the lawn isn’t dense enough to block its growth.
At Lawn Doctor, we help prevent and control crabgrass with a combination of pre-emergent treatments (to stop seeds before they sprout) and post-emergent treatments (to target any visible breakthrough). With consistent care, we work to keep your lawn thick, healthy, and naturally resistant to crabgrass.
Nutsedge—often called nutgrass—is a fast-growing, grass-like weed that stands out because it grows taller and faster than the surrounding lawn. It has a bright yellow-green color and thrives in moist or compacted soil. What makes nutsedge especially stubborn is that it spreads through underground tubers, known as nutlets. Each nutlet can produce new plants, making it difficult to eliminate completely once established. There is currently no true preventative product on the market that stops nutsedge from sprouting. However, at Lawn Doctor we use specialized nutsedge control treatments designed to target the plant and its underground system. These treatments help reduce its growth, weaken the root structure, and limit its spread over time.
With repeated applications and a healthier, thicker lawn, nutsedge becomes much easier to manage and significantly less noticeable.
Red Thread is a common lawn fungus that creates pink or reddish patches across the turf. On closer inspection, you may see thin, red “threads” attached to the grass blades—one of the key signs of this disease. It tends to appear during cool, damp, or humid weather, especially in spring and fall. This fungus is most active in lawns that are low in nitrogen, slightly stressed, or growing in compacted or poorly draining soil. While Red Thread doesn’t usually kill the grass, it can leave your lawn looking patchy, dull, or discolored until the turf recovers.
The good news is that Red Thread can absolutely be treated. At Lawn Doctor, we offer two treatment options depending on the severity of the outbreak and the time of year:
- Fungus Control Treatments to stop the active disease and protect surrounding grass
- Lawn Boost/Nutrient Treatments to help the lawn outgrow the fungus and recover faster
With the right combination of treatment and improved lawn health, Red Thread can be significantly reduced and your lawn can return to a thick, green appearance.
Japanese stiltgrass is an invasive lawn weed that spreads quickly and can crowd out healthy turf. It thrives in shady, moist areas and often grows faster than your regular grass, giving lawns a thin, patchy look. Because Japanese stiltgrass drops thousands of seeds each season, it returns year after year unless it’s properly treated. The good news is yes—Japanese stiltgrass can be controlled with the right lawn care plan. The most effective approach is a pre-emergent treatment applied in early spring, typically around the first week of March, before the weed begins to germinate. This timing is crucial because once the stiltgrass sprouts, it becomes much harder to manage.
During the growing season, additional targeted weed control applications help reduce any breakthrough growth. With consistent treatments and healthy lawn practices, you can significantly reduce Japanese stiltgrass and help your lawn grow thicker and stronger over time.
Grubs are one of the most common causes of sudden lawn damage, and spotting the signs early is the key to effective grub control. Grubs are the larvae of beetles, and they feed on your lawn’s root system. When they’re active, they can cause serious thinning, browning, and dead patches. Here are the most common signs you may have a grub infestation:
- Brown or wilted patches that appear even when the lawn is well-watered
- Soft, spongy turf that lifts up easily like a carpet due to root damage
- Increased animal activity such as skunks, raccoons, or birds pecking and digging at your lawn
- Visible white grubs just below the surface when you peel back a small section of turf
If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s important to act quickly. The best defense is a seasonal grub preventative application, which stops grubs before they hatch and begin feeding. If damage has already occurred, a curative grub treatment combined with proper lawn care can help your lawn recover.
Heat stress happens when your lawn faces high temperatures, intense sun, and dry conditions, forcing the grass to slow growth and conserve energy. During this time, even a normally healthy lawn can turn brown, thin, or patchy. Heat stress is very common in the summer and can affect any type of turf, particularly in sunny or sloped areas.Common signs of heat stress include:
- Dry, wilted, or crunchy grass blades
- Footprints or mower tracks that remain visible
- Brown or yellow patches that appear during hot, dry periods
- Sections of the yard that decline faster than others
The good news is that heat stress can be treated and improved, and at Lawn Doctor of Stroudsburg, our professional summer lawn care treatments are designed to help your lawn recover faster and stay strong.
How our treatments help:
- Targeted fertilizer applications deliver essential nutrients at the right time to support recovery without burning stressed grass
- Custom watering and soil management guidance help rehydrate the root system and reduce drought damage
- Professional lawn care programs strengthen turf, making it more resilient to heat and summer stress
- Core aeration in the fall improves root growth and reduces soil compaction, helping your lawn bounce back the next season
- Mowing recommendations from our experts ensure grass stays at an optimal height, providing natural shade and conserving moisture
With consistent care and the right treatments from Lawn Doctor of Stroudsburg, your lawn can recover from heat stress and remain thicker, greener, and more drought-tolerant throughout the summer.
Pre-emergent is a specialized weed control product designed to stop weeds before they grow. Instead of killing visible weeds, a pre-emergent creates a protective barrier in the soil that prevents weed seeds like crabgrass, broadleaf weed, and other common lawn weeds from germinating in the first place. This makes it one of the most important tools in effective weed prevention.Applying a spring pre-emergent is essential for keeping your lawn thick, healthy, and weed-free throughout the season. Once aggressive weeds like crabgrass start growing, they become much harder to control. That’s why timing matters: pre-emergent must be applied before soil temperatures warm up enough for weed seeds to sprout.
Why your lawn needs a pre-emergent treatment:
- Helps prevent crabgrass and annual weeds from taking over
- Reduces competition so your turf stays strong and healthy
- Saves time and money on later weed control
- Supports a thicker, greener lawn throughout the year
- Works perfectly alongside your regular professional lawn care program
When applied at the right time and by experienced technicians, pre-emergent is one of the most effective ways to maintain a beautiful, weed-free lawn all season long. This is most heavily applied during our early spring and late spring treatment.
Many lawn care services are seasonal because treatments work best when applied at the right time in the turf growth cycle. Weather and soil temperatures determine when products like pre-emergent weed control, grub prevention, fertilization, and aeration will be most effective.
- Pre-emergent works only in early spring before weeds germinate.
- Grub prevention must be applied before grubs hatch in late spring/early summer.
- Fertilizer and weed control are timed to support growth and reduce lawn stress.
- Aeration and seeding are done in fall when new grass establishes best.
Seasonal timing ensures each professional lawn treatment delivers the strongest results and keeps your lawn healthy all year.
Lawn care works best when treatments are applied at the right times of year and in the right sequence. Each application has a specific purpose such as feeding the lawn, preventing weeds, controlling weeds that have already sprouted, or building root strength. We recommend a set number of applications because:
- Weeds and lawn diseases emerge in cycles, not all at once. Multiple visits ensure we target them as they appear.
- Fertilizer needs to be replenished regularly to keep your lawn thick, green, and healthy throughout the growing season.
- Some products are time-sensitive, meaning they must be applied at precise intervals for the best results (like pre-emergent weed control).
- Consistent care builds long-term health, helping your lawn resist drought, stress, and future weed problems.
Think of it like routine health care for your lawn-ongoing, seasonally timed treatments create a stronger, more resilient lawn year-round.
Even with professional weed control, it’s normal to see occasional weeds. Nature is constantly spreading new seeds through wind, rain, wildlife, and foot traffic, so no lawn can ever be completely weed-free.Our goal is to keep weeds suppressed and minimized by using high-quality, seasonally timed treatments. We also carefully monitor for specialty or persistent weeds such as nutsedge, wild violet, or ground ivy that may require different products or targeted spot treatments.
With consistent applications and proper lawn care practices, we help ensure your lawn stays as thick, healthy, and weed-resistant as possible.
Most lawns benefit from aeration, especially in the fall, when the soil is naturally more receptive to recovery and growth. Over time, lawns become compacted from foot traffic, mowing, kids playing, and even normal soil settling. When soil is compacted, water, nutrients, and oxygen struggle to reach the root system.Aeration relieves this compaction by pulling small cores from the soil, creating pathways for essential nutrients and moisture to penetrate deeper. This leads to stronger roots, improved drainage, and healthier, thicker, greener grass. Aeration also helps reduce thatch buildup and prepares your lawn to better withstand heat, drought, and heavy use throughout the year.
