You see a weed, you pull it. End of story, right? Not quite. If you don’t get the root out, which is difficult to do, it will simply regrow. Instead, you need a more effective plan, one that takes a proactive approach. Watering deeply and less frequently. When you water too often at short intervals, you’re encouraging shallow root growth and putting your turf at risk for a rise in weeds. In fact, some species even thrive in over watered lawns. Instead, water for longer each time, applying about an inch, but only once per week.
Leaving your grass cut higher. As tempting as it is to mow your lawn short so you can cut less often, this too makes it more vulnerable to weeds. How long you leave it depends on your grass types. However, never mow more than a third off blade height.
Treating different weeds at the right time. It would be nice if there were one product to take care of all weeds. Instead, different types, like broadleaf and grassy, require varying approaches. For broadleaf, treat them with a granular or liquid herbicide in fall, when they’re more susceptible as they’re storing energy for winter. You can also target them in early spring, but they’ll be harder to control since they’re more developed. Grassy weeds, on the other hand, should be suppressed early on in the spring before germination with a pre-emergent product.
Improving turf density. When your lawn is thick, it naturally blocks out weeds better, shading seedlings so they never spread and compete with your turf for resources. Spring provides an ideal time for seeding, as does late summer through early fall. Just don’t apply herbicide right after, which will kill off emerging grass.
