The days are getting shorter and the nights cooler. But that doesn’t mean you can pack up your lawn mower and garden tools quite yet. In fact, as Granbury, TX area lawn care experts, Lawn Doctor of Granbury-Burleson knows that autumn is the key time to perform a variety of lawn care tasks, including the following:
#1: Water if needed. In fall, your lawn won’t need as much water as it does during the summer. But you still want to ensure it’s receiving one to two inches per week. If it’s not, then water once a week for an hour.
#2: Continue mowing. You might be ready to put away your mower, but your lawn isn’t. Instead, continue mowing until your lawn stops growing. Once it does, make sure you also winterize and store your mower properly so it’s in good condition come spring time.
#3: Rake or mulch leaves. A few stray leaves aren’t going to do much to harm your lawn. However, if there’s a thick layer covering your lawn, it can cause fungi and diseases to develop, especially if they’re wet. So aim to keep your lawn as clean as possible by raking the leaves or mulching them with your mower.
#4: Aerate your lawn. Your lawn sees a lot of action in the summer months. As a result, the soil can become compacted over time. When this happens, aeration is the answer and fall is a good time to do it. With aeration, plugs of soil are removed from your lawn, opening up pathways for more nutrients, water and oxygen to get into grass roots.
#5: Seed thin lawns or bare areas. Once you aerate, it’s a good time to seed your lawn, especially if you have a sparse lawn, or bare spots in it. A freshly aerated lawn provides conditions for better seed-to-soil contact, so you’ll have higher germination rates.
#6: Put fertilizer to use. As Granbury area lawn care experts, we know fall is also a good time to distribute a nitrogen-rich fertilizer in your yard. That way, your lawn will have the essentials necessary to store up energy for winter, and grow in greener and stronger come spring.
#7: Get pests under control. Just because winter is coming, doesn’t mean you should put off pest control until next year. In fact, if you want to minimize damage to your lawn and prevent future infestations, it’s important to gain control over pests now.
