Just because your lawn is dormant and probably looks much like the lawn in the photo below, it is not too early to begin thinking about an annual lawn care program. Now is the time to be applying that annual Spring pre-emergent herbicide application to combat many of the broad leaf weeds and grassy weeds, including crabgrass, that will find their way into your lawn this year.
Here at Lawn Doctor of Georgetown / Round Rock, we begin applying our pre-emergent herbicides for our customers in mid-January as we monitor the soil temperatures for the optimum benefit. Knowing the germination conditions of many of the broadleaf weeds and crabgrass is key to a successful pre-emergent treatment coming out of the winter months.
An effective pre-emergent herbicide application sets the stage for your lawn to be as healthy and to look its best throughout the year. Having the weeds under control, allows the turf in your yard to maximize the uptake of the nutrients in the soil, and what ever additionally is applied through fertilization throughout the year.
As part of Lawn Doctor’s Lawn Maintainer Program (7 treatments) we apply a pre-emergent treatment early in the season to control broadleaf, and many of the grassy weeds including crab grass. Additionally, we apply another pre-emergent treatment in the Fall to control the winter weeds and seasonal cool season grasses like Poa annua, and other blue grass varieties. In addition we apply a post-emergent weed control as needed with every service.
You might be asking yourself what is the different between pre- and post-emergent herbicides. It is really simple, the pre-emergent when applied to the lawn either through liquid or granular means, dissolves into the soil and creates a barrier underneath the soil, and has the weeds germinate and begin to grow they pass through that underground layer of herbicide and die off before ever penetrating the soil surface. Post-emergent herbicides are applied to the weeds once they have penetrated the soils service and are visible to the eye.
With our program of weed control and fertilization with our Lawn Maintainer Program, the combination of the weed control with the added benefits of fertilizer we are able to control the weeds in the lawn more effectively which provides additional opportunity for the turf to grow.
