Why do weeds come back after you treat?

Several reasons to see weeds work their way back into your turf.  A frequent cause for first year customers is that seeds from last year need to sprout in order to be sprayed with Herbicide.  Pre-emergent applications early in the year are not universal in blocking all weeds, and are primarily directed at Crabgrass, Purslane and Spurge (We’ll get back to that-).

Another reason is just having grass that has thinned out over a harsh growing season.  WEEDS WILL FIND BARE GROUND and start moving in. Seeding time to prevent weeds begins in mid-August, just a few weeks away. Whether you do it or Lawn Doctor does, your lawn needs some new seed added every year.

Pre-emergent weed protection expires late summer, as it should, to allow adding grass seed every fall.  Expect some new weeds to start appearing on any open soil on your lawn, including concrete edges that were exposed by trimming too aggressively.

Most folks can identify Crabgrass. It’s the main target for our early season weed protection materials. Bet you’ve seen it starting already in July. Some you can also find are very distinct and pictured here; Purslane (thick pedals and stems, almost like decorative succulents you find in pots, https://weedid.missouri.edu/weedinfo.cfm?weed_id=228 ) and Prostrate Spurge (fine, flat, viny and neatly arranged like a spider web, https://turf.purdue.edu/prostrate-spurge/ ).
