Wishing everyone’s lawn looked like this right now, or even any putting greens. Our dry weather cycles would make it difficult enough, but mowing lawn grass this short would likely make it give up and go brown. Let’s talk about cutting your grass-
Mowing Habits for Healthy Grass
Most St. Louis area lawns are covered by Tall Fescue, some in Bluegrass and a few in Zoysia. Bluegrass and Fescue like to be cut TALL, 3-4 inches respectively during the summer. The longer blades help 1)-shade the soil, 2)-Block WEEDS, and 3)- collect more sun for photosynthesis that feeds the plants. A mower at proper height should not quite fit a 2×4 on edge under the deck.
Zoysia is mowed shorter height (1-2 inches) than Bluegrass or Fescue. In the spring of the year, Zoysia lawns may be mowed at the lowest setting on your mower to remove dead leaf tissue. This increases the green-up rate and allows easier and more uniform mowing during the growing season. Raise the mowing height in September to 1.5-2.5 inches in preparation for fall.
When mowing, never remove more than one-third of the leaf blade at any one time. Clippings need not be collected if they do not remain as clumps on the lawn surface, and contribute a lot of nutrition back to a lawn as the decompose.

New watering habits for July
Weekly watering amounts traditionally change during July and August as temps increase. Time to jump up to 1.5 inches of water per week (including rain, if we ever get any). Normal weekly watering during growth season is 1″ per week. But water is needed even during dormant stage of winter to keep roots growing, so get at least ½” per week into the soil in winter.
Not sure how much you’re watering? Set a simple coffee cup out in the sprinkler spray and see how long it takes to collect 3/4″ of water. Every home and sprayer can be different. Run sprinklers for that much time twice weekly.

Brave Men and Women began to stand up to an impossible task of repelling the military might of British forces.
America began forming as a Nation while we formed as Community in a common cause of protecting each other.
People demonstrated the strength of common interest over special interest.
Lives were freely risked then, and still are today, for what can still be the Greatest Nation on Earth.
