Mowing may seem like a mundane chore, but it is an especially vital component of lawn care in Columbus, OH with cool season grasses.\u00a0 Whether you DIY or hire out mowing, mowing tames your grass and provides important care needed to control weeds and keep the lawn healthy.\u00a0 Follow these important guidelines for best results:<\/p>\n

  1. Cut regularly and do not allow your grass to grow greater than 5\u201d.<\/li>\n
  2. Cut no more than 1\/3 of the length of the grass at one time to avoid putting undo stress on the lawn.<\/li>\n
  3. Keep your mower blades sharp all year long. Doing so will reduce the likelihood of disease. Frayed grass is more susceptible to disease than grass cut with a sharp blade.<\/li>\n
  4. Alternate your cutting patterns to reduce the lawn from growing in one direction.<\/li>\n
  5. Mulch your clippings to provide a boost for your lawn.<\/li>\n
  6. Avoid cutting when your lawn is wet.<\/li>\n
  7. Wait 24 hours after a fertilization and weed control application so the products can work their way in to the grass and soil and weeds have enough time to absorb herbicide.<\/li>\n
  8. Never pour gas into your mower while on the lawn. Gas that spills on to the grass will kill the grass it touches.<\/li>\n
  9. Avoid being too aggressive with edging. Edging naturally stresses the grass. If you cut out too much grass along sidewalks and driveways, weeds may fill in these areas.<\/li>\n
  10. Edge your beds at least 2x per year. Doing so will cut the roots of grass growing into the beds and cut the roots of any plants trying to grow into your lawn.<\/li>\n
  11. Do not cut during the heat of the day during the summer. Grass tends to get stressed out in the summer and cutting during the heat of the day stresses the grass.<\/li>\n
  12. Cut on your mower\u2019s highest setting or second highest setting always target 3\u201d to 3.5\u201d as the height of your grass. Taller grass promotes deeper root growth and helps to shade out weed seed germination.<\/li>\n
  13. If your lawn is filled with weeds, such as dandelions, bag the cut so the seeds are kept out of the lawn and will help reduce future weeds.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
