Fungus in Central Ohio<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Due to the large amounts of rain, above average temperatures and humidity, we have seen many lawns that have some form of fungus.\u00a0 \u00a0Certain types of fungus like Dollar Spot and Red Thread usually do not kill your grass as the fungus is only in the leaves.\u00a0 The first course of action for these types is to apply more nitrogen to prompt growth and hope that the fungus grows out.\u00a0 Extra watering or rainfall is likely to cause the fungus to spread even more.\u00a0 \u00a0It is critical to identify the fungus type so treatment is appropriate.<\/div>\n

High humidity, rain and high temperatures create the environment for the fungus to grow and potentially spread.<\/strong><\/div>\n

What to expect with fungus?\u00a0\u00a0Depending upon the type of fungus, you may have to live with some unsightly spots until temperatures cool off.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Will a fungicide program help?\u00a0 A fungicide program may help to contain the fungus but will not likely reverse any fungus this year.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Where does the fungus come from?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Fungi are in the soil and plants and when the conditions are right, the fungus may grow and spread.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Should I water my lawn to get rid of the fungus?\u00a0\u00a0Generally speaking you should not water more to get rid of the fungus.\u00a0 Fungus likes wet areas and more water usually causes the fungus to worsen.\u00a0 \u00a0Don’t mistake the fungus for a dried out lawn.\u00a0 If you look very closely at the grass, lesions are often visible to the naked eye.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

I have seen mushrooms in my lawn, what should we do with the mushrooms?\u00a0 It is best to simply get a soft rake and break them from the stems and let them decompose.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

I have an irrigation system, should I turn it off?\u00a0 \u00a0You may want to consider turning off your irrigation system while we have rain forecast.\u00a0 \u00a0Also, it is critical to ensure your rain gauge is working properly.\u00a0 \u00a0If it is not, you may be irrigating on top of the rain fall which will help the fungus spread.\u00a0 The water from an irrigation system actually will hit grass with fungus and bounce off and spread the fungus to other parts of the lawn.<\/strong><\/p>\n

How much water does my lawn need?\u00a0 1″ of water is almost always adequate per week.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Could these brown spots be grub damage?\u00a0 Right now these spots are not grub damage but spots that are brown could be from grubs later on this summer.\u00a0 \u00a0However, there could be damage from other insects.\u00a0 \u00a0Try the tug test to see if you can easily pull the grass out of the ground.\u00a0 \u00a0If you can, the fungus type may kill the grass or has already spread to the rest of the plant or there could be insect damage.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

When should I irrigate my lawn?\u00a0 The best time is early in the morning so the moisture can dry off in the heat of the day.\u00a0 Avoid irrigating in the late afternoon and evening as this moisture will promote fungus spreading.\u00a0 \u00a0 We recommend fewer irrigation cycles with deeper watering versus watering for shorter cycles more frequently.<\/strong><\/p>\n

How can you tell what type of fungus this is?\u00a0\u00a0We will evaluate your lawn during each visit and assess what we believe the fungus to be.\u00a0 \u00a0However, the only absolute way to confirm the fungi type is to take a sample and then send to a laboratory for their review.\u00a0 \u00a0There are some defining patterns are usually easily seen to ID the fungi but sometimes we need to take to lab to find out.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Can I get rid of the fungus now?\u00a0\u00a0Probably not, but there are some things you can do to reduce chances of the fungus spreading:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Once fungus activity starts, it is very difficult to eradicate the fungus.\u00a0 We may be able to contain it by spraying a fungicide.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n
  2. Depending upon the fungus type, nitrogen may help to grow out the fungus.\u00a0 However, brown patch is not treated by putting down nitrogen so identification is paramount.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n
  3. Bag your grass clippings so that the fungus isn’t spread through these clippings.<\/strong><\/li>\n
  4. Don’t over-water.<\/strong><\/li>\n
  5. Take Pictures and send to us with wide angle and close ups so that we can try to assess more quickly.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
    What can I do to avoid a fungus in the future?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Fungus on lawns is very common and difficult to completely eliminate.\u00a0 \u00a0There are some things you can do to help in the future:<\/strong><\/div>\n
    \n
      \n
    1. Aerate your lawn each year to reduce soil compaction which will allow moisture to drain away more easily from the topsoil.<\/strong><\/li>\n
    2. Introduce new grass that is more disease tolerant such as Tall Fescue.<\/strong><\/li>\n
    3. Ensure your irrigation system is applying around 1″ per week and that the rain gauge is working.<\/strong><\/li>\n
    4. Water your lawn in the morning so that the moisture will dry off prior to the evening.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n
    5. Mow your lawn on the highest setting to reduce stress on your grass.\u00a0 Cutting too low weakens the grass and fungus can easily take over a week grass blade.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n
    6. Start a fungicide program prior to breakout of fungus.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
      Grub Control<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n
      <\/div>\n
      Grubs will again be a huge problem in Greater Columbus.\u00a0 \u00a0We have a had a wet spring and grubs will be abundant.\u00a0 \u00a0Please ensure that you have Grub Control as part of your services with us.\u00a0 Grubs can ruin a lawn very quickly.\u00a0 Grubs are the larvae of beetles and are voracious grass root eaters.\u00a0 We saw dozens and dozens of lawns wiped out partially or entirely in 2017.<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

      Preventive Grub Control is an insurance policy in that if you would have grub damage, Lawn Doctor will apply a curative grub control and seed the impacted areas.<\/strong><\/div>\n
