Rust is a fungal disease that causes lawns to appear yellow\/orange when viewed from a distance. It tends to show up in the late summer, especially when lawn growth has been stunted by summer stress, close mowing, or compaction. Long dew periods or night watering can create conditions ideal for infection, and it thrives when temperatures are moderate (think 68-85 degrees or so).<\/p>\n
Initially, yellow spots will pop up that, with time, will enlarge and cause the powdery orange spores of fungus to be exposed. The powdery orange spores are easily transferred from leaf blades to shoes, pant legs, or mowers, which is the biggest indicator.<\/p>\n
Although this disease causes a slight discoloration of the grass, the damage is mostly superficial and completely temporary. Treatment is not always required, as this disease will runs its course in a few weeks.
