Make Sure Mosquitoes are TOAST this Labor Day!

Mosquitoes are annoying and irritating. They are also the deadliest animals on Earth. That’s right! More deaths are associated with mosquitoes than any other animal on the planet. In the US, the most recognized health concern related to mosquitoes is West Nile Virus, but they also carry heartworm, a common risk for the family dog. So be prepared – and enjoy a mosquito-free yard.

There are a number of steps you can take to help reduce the mosquito population around your home. Since a single teaspoon of water is enough for some species of mosquitoes to breed, eliminating sources of standing water can go a long way. Examples of these sources include pet dishes, kiddie pools, bird baths and planters. Mosquitoes will develop in any puddle that lasts more than four days.

Eliminating breeding sites on a property is important, but it doesn’t totally eliminate mosquitoes. Some species can travel up to 15 miles or more!

Additionally, mosquitoes can detect and are drawn to carbon dioxide – which humans and other animals exhale – from as much as 75 feet away. Mosquitoes are even more attracted to people after they drink a 12-ounce beer! This could be because people may breathe a little faster after a cold brew, or their skin gets a little warmer.

So especially for this Labor Day weekend – don't let your family barbecue be ruined by mosquitoes joining the party. Enjoy your backyard without the hassle of citronella torches, greasy bug sprays, intrusive netting, or bug zappers that have little effect on mosquitoes.
