What Works<\/strong><\/p>\n\n- Mosquito Traps –\u00a0<\/strong>There are a few types of mosquito traps on the market, but they generally all operate by using bait to attract and trap mosquitoes. These products can be effective at eliminating large numbers of mosquitoes; however,\u00a0they can also be expensive.<\/li>\n
- DEET –\u00a0<\/strong>If you’ve used a mosquito spray or lotion, there’s a good chance that DEET was one of the main ingredients. DEET is an effective compound for keeping mosquitoes off of your skin and clothing, though it won’t do much to keep them out of your yard.<\/li>\n
- Picaridin –\u00a0<\/strong>Picaridin is comparable to DEET in its efficacy and how it’s used. However, it’s not quite as commonly used as DEET, simply because it hasn’t been available for use in the United States until recently.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
What Doesn’t Work<\/strong><\/p>\n\n- Wristbands –\u00a0<\/strong>Whether they contain repellents or claim to use a sonic device, any wristband with pest-repelling claims should be avoided. Even if these products do provide some protection, they only protect your wrist.<\/li>\n
- Citronella Candles –\u00a0<\/strong>While Citronella does have some pest repellent properties, it’s largely ineffective in candle form.<\/li>\n
- Sonic Devices –\u00a0<\/strong>Some devices have started popping up that claim to keep mosquitoes away by emitting the sounds of dragonflies. However, these products are ineffective, as there’s no evidence that the sound of dragonflies actually does anything to deter mosquitoes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
