Fall is almost here! Hurricanes, cool temperatures, hot temperatures?<\/p>\n

Your lawn is trying to recover from the insults of summer. We need a good soaking rain in conjunction with fall fertilization to help stimulate regrowth of your turf.<\/p>\n

Brown Spots<\/b><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

These could be from past disease damage this July. The\u00a0fine grasses\u00a0<\/i>in sunny areas were affected, some are regenerating and some need reseeding work. We have seen some grub damage located in Sykesville and Hampstead this past week. If you pull up on brown turf and it lifts out easily without roots, beetle grubs may be present. Your technician will also be checking this with your fall visit.<\/p>\n

\"\"Crabgrass and Japanese Stiltgrass<\/b><\/p>\n

Both will die later this fall with a frost. At this time, attempting to “burn” the crabgrass may also affect your good grass. The best solution is to seed the crabgrass and stiltgrass areas; this will avoid empty spots next year so pre-emergent control is more effective.<\/p>\n

We will be treating summer and fall weeds with your fall service, unless seeding work is to be done soon.\u00a0Seed and weed control are not compatible. Please contact the office if you have or plan to apply your own seed, so both our efforts are working together<\/u>.<\/p>\n

Mowing<\/b><\/p>\n

Continue to mow regularly and carefully – mow gently through newly seeded areas. Heavy clippings will thin out your lawn and damage new seedlings that are trying to establish this fall. Avoid mowing heavily fallen leaves; it is best to blow off or vacuum your fallen leaves on a 10 day interval.\u00a0Wet leaves will cause thinning of your lawn, so plan ahead this fall.<\/u><\/p>\n

Lime<\/b><\/p>\n

Lime (calcium) is an important supplement for your lawn and soil. If you have received a recommendation for lime, please consider the importance for this service. Lime will improve the effectiveness of your fertilizer applications; help with disease prevention; and lime will help keep thatch from getting too thick. We can apply lime anytime this fall – call to get your lime service scheduled this fall.<\/p>\n
