Where is Spring? We went from jackets to shorts!<\/h4>\n

\nThe trees are jumping into leaf, the shrubs are bursting flowers, and the daffodils are fading in the heat. Needless to say, it has been another interesting and difficult spring.<\/p>\n

\"\"Lawn Care<\/h4>\n

Mowing<\/strong>: Now that the grass is growing, be sure to mow weekly<\/span> with a sharp blade<\/span> at 3 inches (usually the length of your index finger). It is best to mow in the evenings when the grass is dry<\/span>. Regular mowing is important for new seeding areas; don’t leave any clumps and go slow over new grass. It is best not to cut the grass just before or on the same day of service; this will decrease the effectiveness of your weed control.<\/strong> Alternate your mowing patterns- especially when the ground is soft, or you will create a “washboard” effect. If you are cutting the grass with a “zero turn” mower, go slow in the shade; otherwise, you will leave bare spots.<\/p>\n

\"\"Weeds<\/strong>: Reminder- we had a stretch of cold weather in March and April that affected our early treatments for weeds. If you are seeing active weeds, please be patient; your spring treatment will address them. Purple flowered- violets, are one of the difficult ones to control- it takes multiple applications. A common misconception of a “white headed” weed is really not a weed but a grass- Annual Bluegrass or Rough Stalk Bluegrass. What you are seeing is the seed head flower; a lot of folks think it is chickweed. The dandelions and other weeds have blossomed and we are now treating them with your normal visits.<\/p>\n

Watering:<\/strong> Don’t forget to water any new grass seed and sod. New plant transplants need to be monitored as well. One rainfall a week is not enough, monitor every other day.<\/p>\n

Grubs:<\/strong> We have already seen beetle grubs in some lawns that were not treated last year. We will be sending out a letter later this month to educate you on grub prevention. Don’t go unprotected!<\/p>\n

Yard Armour Pest Control:<\/strong> HAVE YOU SEEN ANTS, SPIDERS OR CENTEPEDES?<\/p>\n

We can apply a protective barrier so they won’t get into your home.<\/span><\/p>\n

Deer Tick problem?<\/strong><\/span> We can help there too.<\/strong> Ask your service technician or call the office.<\/p>\n

Plant Care<\/h4>\n

Despite the cool weather, the flower blooms have been nothing short of spectacular. My daffodils lasted from early to mid to late. Remember not to cut the daffodil foliage until it has browned out and withered. Otherwise you will limit your flower potential for next year.<\/p>\n

As your perennials and bulbs finish blooming, it is best to remove the seed heads (dead-heading). Yes, you can play some Grateful Dead music if you like!<\/p>\n

Pruning at this time should only be on the new growth, especially after your shrubs have bloomed. Don’t prune your flowering shrubs in the summer\/fall or you will lose your blossoms for next year.<\/p>\n

It is almost tomato planting time. Don’t forget to use some Lobster Compost. Bowmans carries it at their garden center in Westminster.<\/p>\n
