Happy Valentine’s Day<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Brrr… This winter sure is different from last year. 2016-17 we didn’t have temperatures below 30 degrees, and the ground never froze! My little backyard birds are having a difficult time at the bird bath this winter. I hope the famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil doesn’t see his shadow this week!<\/p>\n

Though some of the techs have been on winter furlough, others have been busy in the shop reconditioning equipment and trucks. The woodstove has kept them warm, but they too would like to see some warmer temperatures soon!
\nI think my car has had more salt on it than the roads. That being said, please be careful with salt treatments on your walks and driveways. An over application of salt can leach into your landscape beds and adjacent lawn. This may cause serious damage. Sometimes the soil will have to be removed before replanting. If you have excess product on your hard surfaces, sweep them up or shovel them off before damage occurs.<\/p>\n

Winter weeds – chickweed, henbit, and bittercress are lying dormant and ready to “spring up” as the weather warms up to 60 degrees. If you have an abundance of these plants in your landscape beds, try to eliminate them before they go to seed this spring. We will treat for them in your lawn as the temperatures get above 45 degrees at night.<\/p>\n

Last fall was a dry season; we watched the water levels in the reservoirs drop considerably. Some new seed is still young and not well developed because of the dry conditions. We will be monitoring your new grass this spring and will advise you if there are any special requirements needed.<\/p>\n

Pruning: Now is the time to prune fruit trees and similar ornamentals (Crabapples\/Pears). Always prune the sucker sprouts that grow vertically along the inside of the main branches. The general rule of thumb is to prune from the inside out, to allow for more air and sunlight into the interior of the tree. Never prune your trees like you would shrubs; this can cause permanent damage. Any questions contact an expert like Bartlett or Carroll Tree service.<\/p>\n
