You see a weed, you pull it. End of story, right? Not quite. If you don’t get the root out, which is difficult to do, it will simply regrow. Instead, you need a more effective plan, one that takes a proactive approach. Watering deeply and less frequently. <\/strong>When you water too often at short intervals, you’re encouraging shallow root growth and\u00a0putting your turf at risk for a rise in weeds. In fact, some species even thrive in over watered lawns. Instead, water for longer each time, applying about an inch, but only\u00a0once per week.<\/p>\n Leaving\u00a0your grass cut higher. <\/strong>As tempting as it is to mow your lawn short so you can cut less often, this too makes it more vulnerable to weeds. How long you leave it depends on your grass types. However,\u00a0never mow more than a third off blade height.<\/p>\n Treating different weeds at the right time. <\/strong>It would be nice if there were one product to take care of all weeds.\u00a0Instead, different types, like broadleaf and grassy, require varying approaches. For broadleaf, treat them with a granular or liquid herbicide\u00a0in fall, when they’re more susceptible as they’re\u00a0storing energy for winter. You can also target them\u00a0in early spring, but they’ll be harder to control since they’re more developed. Grassy weeds, on the other hand, should be suppressed early on in the spring before germination with a pre-emergent product.<\/p>\n
