\u201cNo grass but plenty of mosquitoes,\u201d Danny\u2019s daughter Janet said, pointing toward a small stream that borders the property. \u201cDad wants us outside with all these bloodsuckers!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnyway,\u201d Danny said with a laugh, \u201cI\u2019m thinking it\u2019s time to improve the backyard. It should be a pleasant place to hang out, and I don\u2019t want to have to do a ton of maintenance. What\u2019s involved in making this happen?\u201d<\/p>\n

How to Have a Better Backyard<\/strong><\/p>\n

As a local lawn service in Danny\u2019s hometown of Hyde Park<\/a>, we\u2019re very familiar with local growing conditions. In terms of specific issues, we can talk about mosquito prevention, adding shade to the landscape, and, our particular specialty, getting healthy grass to grow.<\/p>\n

Mosquito prevention is an ongoing task for property owners with streams, ditches, or other landscape features that are always wet. Mitigation techniques include minimizing the amount of standing water on the property as much as possible, as well as the spraying of family and pet safe products to eliminate developing and adult mosquitoes. This spraying needs to be repeated throughout the warm weather season, more frequently in years with lots of rain.<\/p>\n

Adding share to the landscape can be addressed by adding trees and large shrubbery to the landscape. Additionally, it\u2019s always worth considering having a local contractor build a gazebo, screen house, or other shade feature. Screen houses have an additional mosquito-control function.<\/p>\n

Finally, getting a great lawn established – our specialty. It sounds like some soil amendments – adding vital nutrition to the lawn – would be the first step, followed by power seeding and fertilizer throughout the growing season.
