Green Grass Tips for the Havertown Area

You may not know this, but proper lawn care – to get the greenest lawn possible – requires more than just a quick mowing and sporadic watering. Whether you live in Havertown, or in Drexel Hill, Upper Darby, Yeadon or Lansdowne, here are some tips to help you get the green grass and healthy lawn you’re after:

Be Mindful of Mowing Heights. Did you know the height of your mower blades can actually impact the health of your grass? That’s because when mower blades are set too low, it places stress on the grass, making it more susceptible to weeds, diseases, drought and pests. Rather, it’s best to keep your mower blades higher and to mow more frequently to promote good health and lush, green grass.  Mow at a height of 3 to 3 1/2 inches.

Don’t Forget to Fertilize. Just like a person, your lawn needs key nutrients in order to survive and thrive. And when there’s a nutrient deficiency, it can lead to weak growth – and weak color. That’s why a regular fertilization plan is so important. It doesn’t simply feed grass, but also strengthens roots, resulting in thick, green grass in the process.

The most important nutrients for healthy lawns are nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous. Typically, the best approach to take is to apply a balanced fertilizer combined with a pre-emergent weed control product. This will feed your lawn, while also taking care of stubborn weeds, like crabgrass, before they sprout.

Tackle Problem Spots. If your lawn has bare areas or spots with thinning grass, give them some special attention. Take a high-quality seed mix and distribute the seed into these spots with a lawn spreader. Make sure to water new seed on a regular basis.  Seeding is best done in the Fall.
